75th Anniversary of the Official Grand Opening of Port-Royal NHS
This summer, Port-Royal National Historic Site celebrates 75 years since its reconstruction, marking the beginning of the historic preservation movement in Canada. Parks Canada, in collaboration with the Province of Nova Scotia, Taste of Nova Scotia and the local community, invites you to join us Sunday, July 3rd, from 10am - 4pm as we celebrate the occasion. The official ceremony will begin at 1pm.

All will be welcome to receive the Order of Good Cheer: a tradition that first began at the Port-Royal Habitation. This distinction is normally reserved for visitors to our province. However, on this special day, the Order of Good Cheer will be granted to ALL attendees, including Nova Scotians.

July 3rd will also mark a once-in-a-lifetime stop on the Taste of Nova Scotia Good Cheer Trail. Visitors are invited to sample locally-made food and drink from Good Cheer Trail members against the backdrop of the Order of Good Cheer’s birthplace.

Celebrations will also feature a locally-produced vignette harkening back to the 1941 grand opening celebrations at Port-Royal. This play tells the story of Harriette Taber Richardson and her love of the Habitation. Order of Good Cheer swearing-in ceremonies will take place throughout the day, as will Kids Zone activities including airbrush tattoos and visits from Parka, the Parks Canada mascot. The Annapolis Community Band will provide a beautiful live soundtrack to the day!

Parking is limited, so car pool with a friend (or two!), bring a lawn chair, and enjoy the day - rain or shine!

Sharing Cultural Alliances and Traditions
The Mi’kmaq welcomed the French to Port-Royal over 400 years ago - the two cultures met and shared experiences and knowledge, forging a strong friendship and alliance. This alliance would eventually lead to intermarriage between the Mi’kmaq and the French. Descendants of this alliance, the members of the Association des Acadiens-Métis-Souriquois, will share their rich heritage and culture with visitors. Between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, there will be a smudging ceremony, traditional songs, Seven directions prayer and craft displays.
