It is recommended that you set aside at least one full day to visit the Fortress. With over 50 buildings and covering a 12-acre area, the Fortress is large. Be sure to plan enough time to truly appreciate and enjoy this remarkable place.

Step back in time to 1744! Experience Louisbourg, a thriving seaport and capital of Île Royale (Cape Breton Island). The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of the busiest harbours in North America and one of France's key centres of trade and military strength in the New World. Today, the Site is an exciting and entertaining lesson in history. Discover its many secrets!

How to make the most of your visit:

Your first stop is the Visitor Reception Centre, just beyond the modern town of Louisbourg. Ample free parking is available. You'll take a 7-minute bus ride from the Visitor Centre to the Fortress. Remember to bring your camera, film, warm clothing.

Recommended visiting time:

One full day. Plan a minimum of four hours to see selected buildings and exhibits. Allow plenty of time to stop and talk with the "interpretors" of the Fortress. If you have more time, visit Lighthouse Point and Kennington Cove.
