Long before canneries were established, Coast Salish people fished the banks of the Fraser River, including the site of present-day Steveston. "Salmon People" examines the fishing history of the Coast Salish people. In this new exhibit at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, uncover the significance of fish and fishing in their culture from past to present.

The story is told through artifacts, images and text - many of which were found in Richmond. There is also a large dip net that would have been used to fish from canoes in the river. Also featured is art from prominent Coast Salish artist Susan Point.

The Coast Salish fished for many different types of fish in addition to salmon, including eulachon, sturgeon, herring, trout and cod. Discover how these were used in trade and how they fit into the mythology of the people.
