Duration: 90 minutes

  • “Lighthouse Families” (Grades K-3): Why are lighthouses important? Bring your class to the first lighthouse on Canada’s west coast and experience how simple tasks as a child today would be more difficult if you lived in a lighthouse 150 years ago. Discover Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site with your class as a costumed interpreter leads you on a 90-minute tour where you can see, touch and live as a lightkeeper’s family.
  • “Coded Communications” (Grades 4-8): Used in aiding transportation and navigation, to saving lives or just saying “hello,” students will have the opportunity to create their own flags to spell out messages for other groups, and practice in morse code. With the guidance of a costumed interpreter, this 90-minute program will allow your students to discover the significance of communications technologies that would have been used at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites over the past 150 years.
  • “The Platoon Challenge” (Grades 9-12): Report for duty at Fort Rodd Hill, as your students are divided into their own “platoons” and compete with each other in their assigned roles of people from the Great War. Facilitated by a costumed interpreter, this 90-minute challenge for students will help them understand the strategic placing of this military post, how its location proved to be advantageous for defence, and to discover the challenges and hardships faced by those stationed here a century ago.
