Bring the sights, smells, sounds and taste of Victoria 100 years ago to your family.

Costumed re-enactors from the Victoria-Esquimalt Military Re-enactor Association and Parks Canada bring the last days of peace to life, when families gathered to make happy memories before the soldiers sailed overseas.

Dress in your best "Downton Abbey" style; bring an old-fashioned family picnic to enjoy in the shade of Garry oak trees. Join up at the Recruitment Tent--trainee soldiers will receive a broom handle, some basic kit, and learn 1914 infantry drill movements! If you're brave enough, sample boiled bully beef and hard tack from our 1914 field kitchen!

Join in the family tug o' war--or are croquet and cricket are more your style? Sip a cup of tea--or a chilled period soda--with the Patriotic League of Victoria as the bands of the 5th Field Regiment, RCA and The Canadian Scottish play. Period weapons demonstrations will put a whiff of cordite in the air, and open-air programs will examine topics like "You expect me to eat that?": Soldiers rations of 1914" and "First to Serve: Victoria's Nursing Sisters."
