This year 2014, marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. Join us in some of the most significant engagements of the war to be played out along the Great Lakes at Fort George National Historic Site and Fort Malden National History Site.

Fort Malden Opening Day

Canada Day Celebration

Celtic Festival

Fort George comes alive with the sounds of Pipes and Drums. In Partnership with the Niagara Regional Police Pipe and Drum Band Fort George will host the First Annual Celtic Festival at the Fort. Hundreds of professional Musicians will be in attendance for this premier event that will include, Celtic Dancing, a Cheer Tent, a kids “Heavy” event zone, individual Pipe Band performances and of course the “Mass Band.” Let your kilts fly at the Fort!

  • 11:00 am - Celtic Parade: Downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake

Great War Encampment

Saturday and Sunday, July 19 - 20
Fort Malden National Historic Site

100 years ago, Canadian Soldiers marched off to fight the Great War! Come experience the First World War at Fort Malden on July 20, 2014. With infantry, artillery and cavalry displays, families will learn about Canadian soldiers at war from a century ago. Witness the awesome displays of the 1st Hussars as they demonstrate horse riding and tactics from a time when Fort Malden was their recruiting office for Essex County.

A Garden Party on the Eve of the Great War: Commemorating the Declaration of the First World War

Join us for an early 20th Century style garden party to commemorate the declaration of the Great War! Come in your best Downton Abbey attire for an evening of games, food and merriment!

Cruise-in on the Parkway Car Show

Sunday, July 27

Fort George is proud to host for the first time the Corvette Club of Niagara’s annual “Cruise-in” on the Parkway Corvette and Classic Car Show. Over 300 classic cars will surround Fort George for a day of fun for the whole family. Food will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to the Niagara Children’s Center. The Car Show will be located on the grassy area directly in front of Fort George.

Military Heritage Days

Saturday and Sunday, August 2 - 3
Fort Malden National Historic Site

Come to Fort Malden National Historic Site to see Canadian Soldiers from the First World War plus 2000 years of military history as we take you from Romans to Redcoats and beyond. The whole family will be blown away by muskets, cannons and music. Kids can participate in the Parks Canada Xplorer Scavenger Hunt, learn to march like a British Soldier, or dress up as a boat and participate in a water fight to recreate the Battle of Lake Erie. Discover even more through interactive opportunities, such as tactical and musical demonstrations, and various military encampments will be sure to inspire long lasting, unique memories for all.

Fife & Drum Muster and Soldiers' Field Day

Saturday and Sunday, August 16 - 17

This weekend-long event is a pageant of military music by Fife and Drum corps from the United States and Canada as well as a competition of 1812 drill teams from Fort George, Fort Malden, Fort York and Fort Erie – a collection of the premier 1812 military sites in Ontario.

Art by the River

Love art? Join over 150 top notch artists and artisans in Amherstburg at Art by the River, Essex County's original arts and crafts festival. Browse before you buy. All art is juried and personally handmade by the artists. Admission is $5; children 12 and under are free! Echoes of Niagara’s Past

Saturday and Sunday August 23 - 24
Fort George National Historic Site

Join us as Fort George and the Lincoln and Welland Regimental Museum commemorate over 200 years of Niagara’s Military History. The Fort will come alive as Interpereters, Animators and Veterans display uniforms, weaponry and vehicles from the War of 1812, the First World War, the Second World War and many more. The Fort is open both days from 10:00am to 5:00pm with the last ticket being sold at 4:15pm. Demonstrations will be happening throughout the day inside the imposing walls of Fort George. Regular admission rates to the Fort apply.

Grand Canadian Steampunk Exposition

A Grand Exposition of Canadian Steampunk grandeur, a festival of epic proportions, sights and sounds to entertain and delight... all this and more. Three days of Canadian Steampunk amazement and astonishment in southern Ontario in the Niagara region, featuring STEAM POWERED GIRAFFE and ABNEY PARK as our headliner musical guests, with many more performers to be announced!

A largely-outdoor Steampunk festival within a War-of-1812 Canadian fort, with activities, presentations and workshops for all ages and interests.

Fort George Garrison Christmas

A Garrison Christmas

Fort Malden National Historic Site

In December 1814, soldiers from the army of the United States spent a chilly Christmas season garrisoning the ruins of Fort Amherstburg. Come and check out how soldiers two hundred years ago celebrated Christmas. View decorations made by students from school in Essex County, and help us judge our colouring contest. Sip cider, eat cookies, or even treat yourself to a soldier's Christmas meal. Children can make decorations to take home and participate in various games and activities. Regular admission fees apply. Open 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
