Sites Remaining on the 1980 Tentative List
It has been acknowledged that the official Tentative List from 1980 is outdated. Over the past two decades the following events have resulted in changes to several of the original 10 natural sites on the Tentative List:
Gros Morne and Wood Buffalo National Parks of Canada have been nominated and inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Thomsen River has been absorbed into the Aulavik National Park of Canada (N.W.T.).
Lancaster Sound has not been incorporated into Sirmilik National Park of Canada (Nunavut) as originally proposed, and Prince Leopold Island also remains outside the park. The focus of the original Great Lakes site which suggested Georgian Bay Islands National Park of Canada (Ontario) and Fathom Five Provincial Park (Ontario) has been shifted to cover instead the proposed Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area of Canada (including the Schreiber Channel). Both Aulavik (N.W.T.) and Sirmilik (Nunavut) National Parks of Canada (N.W.T.) will be included in the rating system below.
Likewise, Funk Island Ecological Reserve (Newfoundland and Labrador), Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve (Newfoundland and Labrador), and the Tuktoyaktuk Pingoes (N.W.T.) will also be rated.
The rather curiously named site on the 1980 Tentative List of “Lac la Ronge or Quetico Park” (Ontario) will be separately rated.
