Environmental Impact Assessment
Project-Level Assessment
A project-level environmental impact assessment is a systematic process designed to identify, evaluate and mitigate the potential adverse environmental effects of a proposed project. It is an important tool in planning projects to avoid or reduce potential adverse impacts on natural or cultural resources within our protected areas. Project environmental impact assessments may be required under federal legislation or, if there are potential adverse effects but no applicable environmental impact assessment legislation, under Parks Canada policy.
Projects in national parks, national historic sites, or national marine conservation areas may require assessments under one or more of the following:
Canadian Environmental Assessment Act
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act is triggered in national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas when Parks Canada is the proponent of a project, provides financial assistance to a project, disposes of an interest in land for a project, or issues a listed permit or licence for a project. Nunavut Impact Review Board
The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act established the Nunavut Impact Review Board. The Nunavut Land Claim states that projects in national parks in Nunavut must be screened by the Nunavut Impact Review Board. View the public registry.
Inuvialuit Final Agreement
The Inuvialuit Final Agreement requires that developments in Ivvavik National Park of Canada and developments that are likely to cause negative environmental impacts in Aulavik National Park of Canada, Tuktut Nogait National Park of Canada and Pingo Canadian Landmark need to be reviewed by the Environmental Impact Screening Committee. The committee will determine if an environmental impact assessment is required.
Yukon Environmental Socio-economic Assessment Board
The Yukon Environmental Socio-economic Assessment Board was established under the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act. The Act sets out a process to assess the environmental and socio-economic effects of projects and other activities in the Yukon or that might affect the Yukon. View the public registry
Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board
The Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act established the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board. Preliminary screenings under the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act are conducted by Parks Canada and, if required, environmental impact assessments are conducted by the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board.
