Events and Activities – Learn, Discover, Explore

From May 1st to September 30th, Grasslands National Park offers guided hikes, astronomy programs and special events. Hike to the top of the famous 70 Mile Butte, discover a dinosaur fossil or learn how to make traditional cowboy coffee. There is something here for everyone!

Activities

Please Note: Changes to our summer 2011 programs.

  • Teepee Rings and Other Things: (West Block)
    Learn about the First Nations people who once lived on this landscape and visit amazing finds from the past. Distance: 3km. Meet at Visitor Centre at 8:30am.
    Cost: $4.90/person
    - May and June: Every Sunday (from May 22nd)
    - July and August: Every Sunday and Wednesday
    - September: Every Sunday (except September 4th- see Special Events)
  • Little Trail on the Prairie: (West Block)
    Learn about the richly textured world of the Frenchman River. The source of life for People and Critters! Distance: 2km. Meet at Visitor Centre at 8:30am.
    Cost: $4.90/person
    - June: Every Wednesday
    - July and August: Every Monday and Thursday
    - September: Every Sunday (except September 3rd- see Cowboy Coffee)
  • Prairie Stories: (West Block)
    A great overview of Grasslands National Park. Hike to the top of the famous 70 Mile Butte. Distance: 5km.
    Meet at Visitor Centre at 8:30am.
    Cost: $4.90/person
    - July and August: Every Tuesday
  • Cowboy Coffee: (West Block)
    Listen to stories about the open range, go for a wagon ride and taste a cup of traditional cowboy coffee.
    Meet at Visitor Centre at 9am.
    Cost: $15.70 (includes lunch)
    - July 16th, 2011
    - August 20th, 2011
  • Dinosaur Safari: (East Block)
    Search for dinosaur fossils in the Badlands of Rock Creek. Pre-registration required. Meet at McGowan’s Campground at 9am.
    Cost: $4.90/person

    - August 27th, 2011

  • May 28th Star Party: (East Block)
    Join the Royal Astronomical Society for a night of stargazing! Check out the rings on Saturn or catch a glimpse of another Galaxy! Free!
  • June 18th East Block Party:
    An annual family event to celebrate with friends and neighbours the unique treasures of the East Block. Wagon rides, Music and old fashioned fun! Free!
  • July 1st Canada Day Party: (West Block)
    An annual event to celebrate our amazing country! Free!
  • July 9th Fossil Festival: (East Block)
    Join us for a day of discovery, excitement and fun! Learn about the dinosaurs and the fascinating fossils hidden in the badlands! Free!
  • July 29th and 30th Star Party: (West Block)

  • August 13th Prairie Night: (West Block)
    Discover the secrets of a Prairie Night! Western Style Campfire and Supper, Cowboy Songs, Astronomy and seek out the Black-footed Ferret in the dark!
    Cost: $15.70/ person (includes supper)
    Pre-registration required.
  • September 4th Wood Mountain Wind-Up: (East Block)
    Sit back and enjoy the cultural stories from the prairie people who have experienced this colourful landscape first-hand! Free!

 

Hike with the Expert

A group tour. Let us welcome you to this beautiful and complex terrain through an interpreter-led tour

  • May 21st Snakes:
    Join reptile expert, Dennis Jorgensen, for a hike out to a snake hibernaculum. Distance: 6km.
  • June 4th Birds:
    The early bird gets the worm! Join Conservation Biologist, Rob Sissons, for a birding morning! Distance: 3-6km.
  • June 11th Flowers:
    Spring is a beautiful time of year! Come and learn about prairie wildflowers! Distance: 1-3km.
  • June 25th and July 23rd Bison:
    Join bison expert, Wes Olson, in a search for the bison. Distance: up to 8km.
