Since the fall of 1998, hikers may access the backcountry along the Laurentien Trail. With its 75 km through the Laurentian forest, this trail represents a real challenge for outdoor adventurers.
The Laurentien Trail cuts the northern section of the park. It can be hiked in five days (four nights) if you walk 15 to 20 km per day. The linear, one-way trail provides you with greater tranquility and a unique outdoor experience. You may also add a few easier days to your itinerary and thus prolong the duration of your hike. The trailhead is at Le Passage Lookout and the journey ends at the Rivière-à-la-Pêche Service Centre. There is a road distance of 30 km on the Parkway between your departure and arrival. Hikers are responsible for their own transportation back to their vehicle.
The trail winds along mountainous terrain, affording some spectacular views. Altitude varies from 100 to 450 m. The forested landscape is varied. It is composed of maple, pine and fir groves, where individual trees of majestic proportions can be found in mature stands. Numerous lakes, ponds, streams and cascades add variety to the landscape and provide a chance to cool off. Wildlife is more easily observed in this area, undisturbed by other human activity.
Remnants of past activities prior to the park are visible along the way. Old logging roads and dams bear witness to over a century of logging.
There are few facilities along the trail. Nine primitive campsites 7 to 9 km apart are provided. Campfires are prohibited, bring a portable campstove to prepare your meals.
You are on your own and responsible for your safety.
For information regarding the trail, maps and advice when you're planning your hike (or trip) or to receive the Laurentien Trail Information Guide, please call (819) 538-3232. A few tips: Make sure you are informed of the difficulties of the journey. This is a remote area, help can take some time to arrive. Carry a first-aid kit and extra food.
