Nearly 2,000 people took part in the activities offered for the occasion at Forillon Park. “It was a beautiful day! Warm and sunny, with smiling faces all around! Swimming at the pool in the Recreation Centre proved to be very popular and was offered free of charge to children. The same was true of two whale-watching cruises, which were also free for children. In fact, a third cruise was added because there were so many participants! Gallantine’s musical show in the afternoon attracted dozens of families. Children danced, laughed and sang along... It was wonderful to see that!” said Bruce O’Connor, Interpretation Co-ordinator at Forillon Park.

Many visitors made fascinating discoveries with the help of the park’s interpreters, who gave short topical presentations on some of Forillon’s little-known natural treasures. In particular, the presentations on lynxes and sharks were a real hit. Many children also took part in the creative workshop and the special activities on the grounds of the Recreation Centre (e.g., face painting, a visit by Parks Canada’s mascot Parka, etc.).

In Gaspé, some 50 people attended the traditional official ceremony at the Monument des Braves. The Honourable Pierre Duchesne, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, veterans and representatives of the Gaspé branch of the Royal Canadian Legion were in attendance. In addition, nearly 500 spectators took in the concert by Pascal Bessette as well as Pamela Rooney and the Exceptions at the Centre récréatif Luc-Germain.

“We are delighted with the success of this event,” said Nancy Rochefort, chair of the local Célébrations Canada Gaspé committee. By partnering with Parks Canada for this 15th edition of Canada Day in Gaspé, we were able to offer the public an excellent program of activities. There was something for everyone, young and old alike!”

Both Parks Canada and the local Célébrations Canada Gaspé committee would like to extend their thanks to the citizens of greater Gaspé for having accepted, in such large numbers, the invitation to take part in outdoor activities and musical events in celebration of Canada Day. We wish you all a wonderful summer full of inspiring experiences in the great outdoors!
