Artist-in-Residence 2012 Applicant’s Guidebook
Find inspiration on Pukaskwa’s wild shore. Explore hidden driftwood beaches, dramatic rocky headlands, and the everchanging moods of Lake Superior as an Artist-in-Residence.
You won’t be disappointed.
As Artist-in-Residence, you will:
- bring your creativity and camping supplies to Hattie Cove, a small campground tucked onto the shores of Lake Superior
- share your art and chat with visitors from around the world
- help park staff promote your work and residency
- have the opportunity to sell your work in the park
- provide Parks Canada with one quality digital photograph of a work you produce while in residence for educational and promotional use
Parks Canada will:
- provide one campsite at Hattie Cove and entry passes for you and a guest for your week as Artist-in-Residence
- provide space in the Visitor Centre for you to install a temporary exhibit
- promote you and your work in the park through local media, the web, and Parks Canada’s social media channels
- provide space, materials, and promotion for workshops
- support grant applications, if mutually beneficial
New for 2012
In 2011 we brought back Art in the Park, aiming for an intimate and sustainable program. We learned a lot, and are making improvements for 2012.
Here’s what’s new:
Visitors love stories.
To help you share stories, “Meet the Artist” sessions will take place from 1pm - 2pm each Friday through Tuesday. It’s your chance to have coffee with visitors from around the world.
Visitors love art.
Visitors love art and they plan their vacations around it. To help them, we’re going to post artist-in-residence information online in February. To do that, artists selected for the program must confirm their participation and workshop details no later than November 30, 2011.
Visitors really love art.
And they want to buy yours. This year, artists with an approved Pukaskwa National Park Business Licence may sell their work directly to visitors.
Things take time.
A lot of time. So we’re starting earlier and getting sticky with deadlines. If you are selected and miss the November 30, 2011 deadline, we will select an alternate to take your place.
Simpler is better.
In 2012, residencies will run from Thursday through Tuesday with free workshop offerings on Saturdays at 2pm and/or Sundays at 10am.
And less is more.
Don’t get us wrong - we loved the diversity of artists that visited in 2011. However, to ensure you get the quality promotion and attention you deserve, only twelve residencies will be available in 2012.
