Frontcountry camping

Peak season (mid May to mid September)

Hattie Cove, located in the northwest corner of Pukaskwa, offers a 67-site campground. The south loop of the campground has 29 electrical sites, several of which are large and well-suited to RV’s, and 13 non-electrical sites. Two of the electrical sites are wheelchair accessible. The north loop has 25 non-electrical sites including one walk-in site. All campsites have a picnic table and fire pit, and most have a sandy tent pad.

Each campground loop has a centrally located comfort station with showers and flush toilets. The water in the campground is potable and is tested daily. Running water, showers and flush toilets are available from the Victoria Day weekend in May until about mid September.

Mid-September to mid November

The road to the campground remains open until the snow stays on the ground, which is usually about mid November. The comfort stations are closed, but pit toilets are available. Potable water is available from an outdoor tap at the Administration building.

Mid November to early April

The road to the campground is closed. Visitors can park their vehicle at the Administration building and ski, snowshoe, or hike to the campground. Camping is permitted. Pit toilets are available.

Early April to mid May

Once the snow has melted, the road to the Hattie Cove area and to the visitor centre parking lot is open.  However, the road immediately into the campground does not open until about mid May.  Campers may park their vehicles in the Visitor Centre parking lot and walk to a campsite.  Pit toilets are available.  Potable water is available from an outdoor tap at the Administration building.

Backcountry camping

Backcountry camping (at developed primitive campsites) is available along the Coastal Hiking Trail, which winds for 60 km over rough terrain. Each campsite offers a tent pad, privy, bear box and fire pit.

Random camping at non-developed sites is permitted along the coastal canoe route.

The park limits the number of parties permitted in the backcountry. Anyone planning a trip into the backcountry should call the park well in advance to reserve their trip. Anyone travelling in the backcountry must register-in and register-out of the park by contacting park staff.
