Buff-breasted sandpipers are often numerous in the Onion Fields by early September. With the passage of any cold front between approximately September 12 to 18, a massive movement of broad-winged hawks can be expected.. This is also the time when large numbers of blue jays first arrive. By mid-September, common terns are abundant in off-shore waters. However, the number of terns has declined severely in recent years.
