Winter

Annual Christmas Bird Count - in December - all day

Point Pelee and the Friends of Point Pelee host the annual Christmas Bird Count. This is part of a series of over 1500 similar counts across North America. Birdwatchers will be traversing the countryside around Point Pelee to record the numbers and species of birds present in the area at this time. People with bird feeders in the county are also invited to contribute by observing the birds at their feeders.

The first Christmas Bird Count took place on Christmas Day 1900 with 27 people counting in 25 locations across the continent. The event originated as a protest to the traditional holiday slaughter in which teams competed to see who could kill the most birds and other animals in one day. Today the information collected from all the Christmas Bird Counts across North America will give scientists and environmentalists insight into the long-term health of bird populations and the environment.
