Tuktut Nogait National Park of Canada
Park Management Plan
Park management plans guide park managers in the protection, management and operation of a national park. A park's management plan outlines the appropriate balance of preservation, education and visitor use goals and sets out the framework and priorities for achieving them. It also identifies a strategy for park managers, stakeholders and the general public to work together over the long term.
The Tuktut Nogait National Park Management Plan is being prepared cooperatively by Parks Canada and the Tuktut Nogait National Park Management Board. An opportunity for the broader Canadian public to contribute its knowledge, expertise and suggestions is also an important part of the planning process. Public meetings were held in Paulatuk, Inuvik, Déline and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. In addition, Parks Canada circulated newsletters to the public and key stakeholders in order to provide updates on the management planning process.
As a representative example of a portion of the Tundra Hills Natural Region, Tuktut Nogait National Park of Canada is an important component of the larger system of national parks throughout the country. This plan will set out a strategy for the care and management of the park as a wild, unspoiled arctic wilderness with outstanding natural and cultural values. One of its primary goals is to maintain and protect the park's ecological and cultural integrity while also promoting sustainable tourism in the region. The plan recognizes the right of Inuvialuit to subsistence usage in the park, in accordance with the Inuvialuit Final Agreemen t and the Tuktut Nogait Agreement.
The park is also intended to enhance the local and regional economies. Therefore, the management plan outlines goals and strategies for facilitating an increase in visitors to the park, through sustainable tourism activities.
Management decisions in the park occur within the parameters of the cooperative management processes and structures set up under the Inuvialuit Final Agreemen t, Tuktut Nogait Agreement . and the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement . This arrangement helps to ensure that all of the appropriate Inuvialuit and government organizations share information and coordinate management strategies.
In keeping with the Canada National Parks Act, this plan will be reviewed, with public involvement, every five years.
