With input from Inuvialuit co-operative management partners, local residents, stakeholders and the broader Canadian public, Parks Canada is developing a new management plan for Aulavik National Park of Canada. The new management plan for Aulavik will outline the long-term vision and the strategic direction for the next five to ten years to:

  • Enhance the connection of all Canadians to the natural and cultural heritage of Aulavik.

  • Enhance visitor opportunities in the park, linking them to other potential visitor opportunities on Banks Island, toward helping to improve tourism and economic development for Sachs Harbour;

  • Manage for the maintenance or restoration of ecological integrity of Aulavik and the care of its natural, cultural and paleontological resources.

The new park management plan is scheduled to be completed by fall 2011.

Why a Management Plan?

Management plans are forward-looking documents that provide a vision of national parks and national historic sites at their future best and the strategies for getting there. The management plan will guide Parks Canada’s decisions and actions in protecting, presenting and operating Aulavik National Park.

The current Aulavik National Park of Canada Management Plan was tabled in Parliament in 2002. The Canada National Parks Act requires that a park management plan be reviewed every five years to ensure the plan continues to be relevant and effective for decision-making with respect to the Parks Canada Agency mandate, legislation, policy, and corporate plan.

Why Get Involved?

We need to hear from you. The values and views of Canadians are at the core of every management plan.

Your input will help provide the direction needed to deliver on Parks Canada’s mandate of protection, education and visitor experience. Your comments and suggestions are essential to producing an effective and meaningful management plan for Aulavik National Park.
