II. Back Country Camping

Terra Nova National Park of Canada offers several primitive camping experiences for outdoor enthusiasts. For your enjoyment and safety, please review the registration and regulations below. Then click on one of the four primitive experiences below for more information.

Registration & Regulations

• Campers must register at a park facility
• Reservations can be made by calling 709-533-2942
• Camping is restricted to designated sites only
• We recommend boiling all water
• Store food, garbage and scented items on bear poles
• All garbage must be packed out
• Open fires are not permitted at Beachy Pond, Dunphy's Pond, Dunphy's Island, Lion's Den North, and Lion's Den South.
• Return your camping permit to a staffed facility. Unnecessary searches are an expense which may be charged to the visitor

I. Outport Trail

The Outport trail is the park's longest trail with some of the most rewarding views and experiences. This 48km return trip trail beings from site 253 in the Newman Sound Campground and ends at Lion's Den South. The trail is only maintained for 17.5 km to the South Broad Cove Campsites, so anyone interested in hiking beyond South Broad Cove must speak to a Park Warden.

These primitive campsites are also accessible by sea kayak.

II. Beachy Pond

Beachy Pond is an enjoyable primitive experience that leads visitors from the popular Sandy Pond to the more reclusive Beachy Pond. The trip starts at Sandy Pond where you can off-load your own canoe. Once you canoe to the end of the pond you will portage through a short 0.4 km trail to the entrance of Beachy Pond. The campsites are about 1km away by canoe.

III. Dunphy's Island

Dunphy's Island is the longest canoe route for primitive camping. The trip starts at Sandy Pond where you can off-load your own canoe. From there, travel across Sandy Pond where you will have a short 0.4 km portage to Beachy Pond. The canoe route continues through Beachy to Dunphy's Pond (a fairly large lake) where you will find the island near the end of the pond.

IV. Dunphy's Pond

Dunphy's Pond (a fairly large lake) is accessible by canoe or foot. Hikers can start their trip from the trailhead located on the TCH at the east end of the park. If you would rather canoe, the route begins at Sandy Pond where canoeists can off-load their own canoe. From there, you will canoe through Sandy Pond, portage 0.4 km to Beachy Pond and canoe through Beachy to the far end of Dunphy's Pond.

III. Group Tenting

Group tenting is available at Malady Head Campground from July to August. Reservations are recommended by calling 709-533-6774 or 709-533-2801.

IV. Winter Camping

Visitors are welcome to tent camping in Terra Nova National Park during the winter although there is no active service offer. No roads, trails or campsites will be cleared of snow. A pit privy will be placed in the vicinity of washroom building #36 near site 357 (Loop W) in Newman Sound campground. Winterized kitchen shelters and firewood will not be provided.
