Gros Morne National Park of Canada

Primitive Camping

Gros Morne National Park maintains primitive camping sites along several park trails. These sites are equipped with picnic tables, pit toilets and tent pads where necessary.

For safety reasons and to minimize human impact in the backcountry, registration is mandatory for use of all primitive campsites. Primitive campsites are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. You must register with park staff at any of the park facilities to purchase a backcountry permit and pay a park fee .

Portable stoves must be used as campfires are permitted only on the beach at Green Gardens and Stanleyville.

These primitive campsites provide various backpacking opportunities for exploring the diverse features of Gros Morne National Park. Trips range in difficulty from easy to very strenuous. Choose only the ones that the weakest member of your group is capable of doing.

The Warden Service monitors all backcountry permits. Allowances are made for weather delays, so a major search would not usually begin until 24 hours after a due date. However, initial investigations are made prior to a major search.

  • Overdue permits are investigated.
  • Return your permit immediately upon completion of your trip.

Please note the Gros Morne Mountain/James Callaghan trail does not open until the beginning of July to protect the habitat on the summit of the mountain.
