Come Celebrate Parks Day with Parks Canada at Kouchibouguac!

KOUCHIBOUGUAC, NEW BRUNSWICK, July 7, 2011 – Entry to Parks Canada’s parks and sites is FREE ALL DAY on Parks Day – Saturday, July 16th! Parks Canada invites you to come out to Kouchibouguac National Park to celebrate Parks Day and Parks Canada’s 100th anniversary of the founding of the first national park service in the world with fun-filled activities!

Summer is just getting started and Kouchibouguac is the place to be. Enjoy the natural beauty of eastern New Brunswick including the famous sand beaches, dunes and warm waters of the Northumberland Straight. All this - only one hour from Moncton!

Parks Day - July 16th - will feature the first Bio Blitz Science Day at Callander’s Beach. Discover the wild things in your backyard and become a scientist for the day! Spend the day exploring trails, wildlife and waters of the park with real scientists through a variety of family-friendly activities:

  • Get out your rubber boots and discover the exciting world of clams!
  • Become an assistant scientist while detecting exotic plants in park trails!
  • Participate in a butterfly and dragonfly inventory – let yourself be captivated by the intrigue and beauty of these fluttering friends!
  • Monitor aquatic insects and discover their murky water world!
  • Express the artist in you by painting one of your discoveries on a life size canvas!

Activities run from 9 a.m. to noon, and again from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participation is limited so reserve your spot by registering with Margaret-Ann Stewart at: 506-876-2443.

Kouchibouguac will also host its first Artists in the Park Day on July 16th. Under the Kouchibouguac summer sky and inspiring setting of Callander’s Beach, local artists paint away and demonstrate their art. Witness how they produce banners for the Banner Festival in Rexton, Richibucto and Saint-Louis-de-Kent communities.

Also happening on Saturday, July 16th:

  • Be officially introduced to Parka the beaver, our NEW Parks Canada mascot!
  • 11 am: Join us at the Visitor Centre for free cake to celebrate 100 years of Parks Canada.
  • 2 pm: Exhibit on Canada’s National Parks: Stop by the yellow umbrella - Kellys beach
  • 3 pm: Puppet Theatre in English 4:00 p.m. in French
  • 8 pm: Outdoor Theatre (in French) Secrets millénaires de la tourbière
  • 10 pm: Dark Sky Delight, a popular weekly stargazing activity
