In 2009, celebrate the centennial of the discovery of one of world’s most famous ancient marine ecosystems - the 505 million year old Burgess Shale fossils in Yoho National Park.

Spiral Tunnels and Burgess Shale Centennial Celebration

September 5, 2009

2009 marks the centennial of the completion of the Spiral Tunnels, and the discovery of the Burgess Shale fossils in Yoho National Park.

Parks Canada, Canadian Pacific Railway, the Friends of Yoho, Field Community Council, the Village of Field and the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation have planned a public event to mark these important anniversaries, the Spiral Tunnels and Burgess Shale Centennial Celebration on September 5th, 2009.

10:00 am kick off Free! 20’ x 40’ Spiral Tunnels Model, Historic Display in Field Community Centre, Photo Front & Face Painting
10:30 am Free! Historic Walking Tour of Field - meet at Field Community Centre
12:00 pm Train departs Banff to Field – tickets are sold out
12:00 pm Free! Beverage Service (tea, coffee, water, lemonade)
12:00 pm – 3:30 pm Free! Live Entertainment – Calgary Fiddlers, local musicians, Mountain WIT Theatre, roving Parks Canada Interpreters, and more!
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Free! Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation presentation at Field Elementary School
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Free! Centennial Tea Party (tea, coffee, lemonade, sandwiches & sweets)
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Free! CPR Exhibit Cars open to public
3:30 pm – 9:00 pm “Shale Ale” Beer Garden
5:00 pm Train departs for Banff – tickets are sold out
6:00 pm Free! Historic Walking Tour of Field - meet at Field Community Centre
6:00 pm – 11:00 pm Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation BBQ and Dance, tickets are $85 and can be purchased by calling 1.250.343.6006 or email reserve@burgess-shale.bc.ca
