Yoho National Park of Canada
McArthur Valley
After August 15th, when seasonal plant foods favoured by grizzly bears begin to lose their appeal, two hiking parties per week may travel through McArthur Valley.
A McArthur Valley hiking permit is required to hike this unmaintained wilderness route. A permit may be obtained free of charge from Parks Canada visitor centres, or Parks Canada's office in Calgary: 1.800.748.7275.
Half of the McArthur Valley weekly hiking permits are available three months in advance of the departure date; the remainder are available on a 24 hour in advance first-come : first-serve basis in person at any Parks Canada visitor centre or Parks Canada's Calgary office. A maximum group size of ten permitted. A minimum group size of six is recommended to reduce the potential for bear-human encounters.
Camping is not permitted in McArthur Valley; designated backcountry campsites are available nearby. A Wilderness Pass is required for anyone planning an overnight trip into the backcountry.
Wilderness travel requires advanced planning and preparation.
