Parks Canada is planning new exhibits and experiences for the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre, in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. This exciting project began in 2006 and aims to be completed by March 2011. The Wickaninnish Centre remains open at this time – find out how and when you can visit.

The Vision

Through public participation, we will redesign the interpretive exhibits in the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre to create a destination valued by visitors and local communities as a place to celebrate and learn about the natural and cultural heritage of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, and the region it represents.

The Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre showcases the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Pacific Rim region. It is the park's main interpretive facility, and receives approximately 100,000 visitors per year. The exhibits in the centre were originally installed in 1984 and no longer meet current visitor expectations or park objectives.

Project Development

In 2006, Parks Canada committed 1.7 million to launch a multi-year project to redesign the interpretive exhibits. A great deal of work has been completed so far to scope out the relevant concepts, topics, and design media for the new exhibits.

Many ideas were gathered from local residents and park visitors through audience research and opportunities for public input.

Next Steps

The next challenge involves the synthesis of these many ideas into concrete plans for new exhibits. This phase of the project has been in motion since last year and will likely continue until summer or fall 2009.

Upcoming steps include completing a cohesive storyline, gathering materials for display and reference, revising concepts, and testing design ideas.

The final stage of the project will involve building and installing the new exhibits. This phase will likely begin in the fall of 2009 and be completed by the fall of 2010.

Then it's all yours to visit and enjoy!

Public Input

Public participation is key to the success of this project. The rich cultural and natural heritage of this region has inspired many wonderful ideas by diverse voices. Thank you to all the community members, visitors, students and staff who have contributed.
