Paddling: Canoeing and Kayaking
Surf Kayaking

Surf kayaking in the waves at Wickaninnish and Long Beach is a common sport.
Watch for board surfers who also ride the waves.
Ocean Kayaking and Canoeing
Most of the Long Beach Unit is exposed to the open Pacific Ocean. Large waves,
rocky reefs and very exposed landing areas make the outer waters unsuitable
for most paddlers. Many paddlers in ocean kayaks and canoes prefer the sheltered
waters of Grice Bay for exploring. Launch at the Grice Bay boat launch when
the tides are high and you may be lucky enough to see marine
mammals such as seals and whales and a great variety of birds.
Note: When the tides are low, much of Grice Bay becomes a large expanse of
mudflat and paddlers can become grounded. Consult tide
tables for mid to high tides before launching here.
