Sustainable Site Design Strategies

The concept of sustainable building incorporates a variety of strategies during the design, construction and operation of building projects.

Buildings account for one-sixth of the world's fresh water withdrawals, one-quarter of its wood harvest, and two-fifths of its material and energy flows. A sustainable building is a structure that is designed in an ecological and resource-efficient manner.

The GINPR Operations Centre was designed to reduce its overall impact on the environment.

Erosion and Sedimentation Control

Strict Erosion and Sedimentation Control measures were followed throughout the construction process. The prevention of any damage to the existing shoreline and marine habitat was a priority.

Alternative Transportation

LEED encourages the development of alternate means transit and use of public transportation:

  • The facility is located near to public transit
  • Bicycle racks and showers have been provided for staff use
  • Parks Canada has invested in a hybrid vehicle to reduce its consumption of fossil fuels

Preservation of Open Space

The original character house has been preserved along with the lawn and ornamental gardens to maintain the neighbourhood character.

Stormwater Storage and Treatment

Rainwater which falls on the roof is collected and stored for use in flushing toilets and for use in the marine operations area for washing equipment. Surplus rainwater passes through a sediment and oil separator before being discharged into the ocean.

Contaminated Site Remediation

A minor amount of contaminated material was discovered on the site and remediated in accordance with Federal standards and procedures.

Landscaping

New planting is drought resistant and does not require a permanent irrigation system.

Exterior Lighting

All exterior lighting complies with dark sky guidelines and requirements for control of site lighting.
