Fire Program Update
As the temperatures increase and the snow melts,
Jasper National Park’s fire management team is gearing up for
another season. In addition to being prepared tp respond to
wildfires, here is a look at what is planned for this spring,
summer and fall.

Prescribed BurnsMore detailed stakeholder
updates will be sent prior to
each prescribed burn and as
more information is known
during or after the burns take
place. If you would like to be
added to the Fire Stakeholder

Hawk MountainThis is a 560 hectare burn
unit scheduled for ignition
this spring. Burning will take
place on the slopes of the Colin
Range, 15 kilometres north
of the Jasper town site and immediately across the Athabasca
River from the former Jasper airfield.
Vine CreekThe 725-hectare Vine Creek burn unit is also planned for this
spring. It is located about 20 kilometres north of the Jasper
town site, on the north side of the Athabasca River. Burning
will take place over two to three days.
Pyramid BenchSmall, prescribed burns are expected to take place in the
fall, within areas on the Pyramid Bench that have received
FireSmart-ForestWise treatment. Burning will take place during
the day, then will be completely extinguished each night. This
is part of an ongoing program.
Mountain Pine BeetleAerial surveys to spot Mountain Pine Beetle colonized trees
will take place once again this year, in partnership with the
Canadian Forest Service.
This just in… Fire Management Plan – 2007What to expect in Jasper National Park for Fire Management
over the next ten years.
The Fire Management Plan brings together information on
the organization, policies and planned general responses for
prescribed burns and wildfires. A new draft version has just
been completed which will give direction to all aspects of the
program for the next ten years.

Alcohol Ban at Snaring Campground: May Long Weekend
To encourage safety and a quality family experience, there will
be a liquor ban at Snaring Campground from May 18 (Friday)
at 9:00 a.m. until May 21 (Monday) at 6:00 p.m.

Jasper Waterworks Project
On behalf of the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the
Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada,
Mr. Rob Merrifield, Member of Parliament, Yellowhead,
and His Worship, Richard Ireland, Mayor of Jasper

JASPER WATERWORKS PROJECT
The ceremony will take place at the waterworks installation at
the South end of Connaught Drive in Jasper, Alberta
May 23,
2007 at 11:00 am.

Jasper National Park’s
Communication team has a new
manager: Carolyn Duchoslav.
Carolyn brings years of
experience and expertise to the
Communications Manager
position, having worked in
Jasper for the past 6 years as a
Communications Specialist, as
well as previous work experience in Jasper as a
Communications Officer. Her resume also includes time
in the South Saskatchewan Field Unit, Yoho National
Park, Regional Office in Calgary, Elk Island National
Park, and Revelstoke/Glacier National Parks. We look
forward to working with Carolyn in her new role!
