Quick update: Phase IIIB: September 2008
Twinning is nearing completion on a nine km stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Lake Louise in Banff National Park. The four lanes are scheduled to be open by late fall 2008, with final surfacing, landscaping, and clean-up completed by 2009.
The August 5th announcement of an additional $100 million investment from the Government of Canada’s “Building Canada” infrastructure plan enables twinning work to proceed on a 14 km section of highway west of Castle Junction. When completed, the entire highway between Banff and Lake Louise will be four lanes.
Clearing work on this next phase will begin later this year, with new road construction starting by spring 2009. Completion is forecast for fall 2011, with final landscaping and clean-up wrapping up in 2012. Construction will include highway fencing and an additional eight wildlife crossing structures (two 60 m overpasses, one 25 m underpass, and five 4 m underpasses). This will improve motorist safety and reduce highway wildlife mortality and habitat fragmentation.
