With the arrival of spring, construction crews will soon be back in action upgrading the final two untwinned sections of the Trans-Canada Highway between Castle Junction and the British Columbia border. This includes the 14 km segment immediately west of Castle Junction (Phase IIIB-2) and the 8.5 km section west of Lake Louise to the British Columbia border (Phase IIIB-3). The 9 km section between them (Phase IIIB-2) is complete.

What’s Happening:

1. Twinning work on the 14-km section of highway west of Castle Junction (Phase IIIB-2) is scheduled to restart in April 2010. Drivers can expect several detours to the new westbound lane to allow construction of two wildlife overpasses over the existing highway lane through the summer.
2. Construction of a new overpass to replace the currently narrow Icefields Parkway Interchange is underway. Rock blasting associated with this project will occur from March 30 to June 1 between 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Blasting will not occur during holiday weekends. This project is expected to finish late fall 2010.
3. Construction on the new Bow River Bridge (4 km west of Lake Louise) began in January 2010 and is also expected to be completed later this fall.
4. The tender for highway twinning construction from Lake Louise to the British Columbia border (Phase IIIB-3) is expected to be awarded late-April. Tree-clearing for the new lanes was completed this past winter and new lane construction is expected to begin later this summer.

Road work will be underway from dawn until dusk.
Temporary delays and detours can be expected so please
obey flag persons and posted speed limits.

Watch for workers and obey flag persons and posted speed limits
through construction zones.
