Banff Wildlife Crossings:
Student Art Contest Winners 2008!
The 2007-08 school season marked another successful year for the Banff Wildlife Crossings Project presentations. Over 2000 students in the Bow Valley and Calgary area participated in the interactive presentations. This year, students were invited to take part in “A World of Wildlife Crossings” art and writing contest. They were asked to illustrate and describe wildlife crossings found around the world. We received many outstanding entries, making it difficult to choose the winners from such a range of talented students.
But we did it! And now you can view their inspiring work.
The Banff Wildlife Crossings Project would like to congratulate all of the students who participated in “A World of Wildlife Crossings” art and writing contest. Your work is inspiring!
Entries were received from grade 4 and kindergarten students. We divided the categories by species and awarded the most creative and accurate entries.
And the winners are:

Massachusetts salamanders cross the road all together once every year to lay their eggs. When the eggs hatch they have to cross the road again! That’s why they put underpasses under the road so they don’t get run over.

In Washington, there used to be fish barriers along the highway. Then they were removed because the salmon couldn’t move through the rushing water. Now since salmon can jump they made a tunnel, so salmon jump in steps with calm water coming down. Then they jump into the tunnel and swim to the other side.
