In 2006/07, the Banff Wildlife Crossings Project visited over 22 schools
in Calgary and the Bow Valley in Alberta, and the Columbia Valley in British
Columbia. Over 2300 students participated in an interactive presentation and
were invited to take part in an art and writing contest.
The 2007-08 school season marked another successful year for the Banff Wildlife
Crossings Project presentations. Over 2000 students in the Bow Valley and
Calgary area participated in the interactive presentations. Students were
invited to take part in “A World of Wildlife Crossings” art and
writing contest. They were asked to illustrate and describe wildlife crossings
found around the world. We received many outstanding entries, making it difficult
to choose the winners from such a range of talented students.
We received an overwhelmingly positive response from the students, with hundreds
of art submissions and over fifty writing pieces.
For the contest, the students were asked to tell us, through art or writing,
what the wildlife crossings structures meant to them and why they are important
for wildlife.
The art contest was divided by grade levels and by school region. You will
notice in some cases there are ties or honourable mentions. It was difficult
to decide between such talented artists!
We had fewer writing submissions, and only in the Grade 3 and 4 category.
We chose three winners from each of the two grades. Their art and writing
is inspiring and may change the way we think about wildlife and its place
in nature. Enjoy!
AND THE WINNERS ARE ...
Thank you to all of the teachers and parents who helped
to make this project a success!
