Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site protects the historic gateway to the Yukon once tread by Tlingit First Nation traders and Klondike gold rush prospectors. The Chilkoot Trail was designated a national historic site because of the role it played in the mass movement of people to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. The Chilkoot Trail has been officially designated by Canada and the United States as a component of the Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park. Other sites preserved include Dawson Historical Complex National Historic Site of Canada , Thirty Mile Heritage River (a section of the Yukon River) and Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park
