William Richard Motherwell was born in Perth (Ontario), Lanark County. He was one of the first settlers in the Pheasant Hills district in southeastern Saskatchewan. Along with numerous other Ontarian settlers, he acquired a 160-acre homestead grant, and built a farmhouse and stable typical of the period.
