A Short Story of a Great Man
Sir Wilfrid Laurier, his chauffeur, and friends© National Archives of Canada / C-63517
Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) was born in Saint-Lin, a modest town north of Montreal
in the Lanaudiere region. The man who eventually became Canada's seventh Prime
Minister led a fascinating political career. Elected leader of the government
in 1896, he took advantage of favourable economic conditions to consolidate
the young Confederation. By laying the basis for greater autonomy in international
relationships and by encouraging immigration and the development of Western
Canada, he guided his country forward into a new era, politically, economically
and socially. Learn more about the history of this great man through the links

circles of power.
