Sir Wilfrid Laurier National Historic Site of Canada

A Long-Lost Package Shows Up

At the historic site, two activities have been designed with primary school children in mind. They appeal to the desire of children to know more about history, giving them an introduction to the life of Sir Wilfrid Laurier and his time. When you're planning school outings, remember you must make advance reservations and inform the National Historic Site staff of your group's special needs.

A package mailed in 1911 has recently turned up at the town post office. Inside the package is a letter from a childhood friend of Wilfrid Laurier containing a secret message. But at the dawn of the 21st century, Sir Wilfrid is no longer around to decipher it. Who can solve this riddle? Following a relay race, role-playing and a visit of the historic house in the company of costumed characters, children will be able to decode the mystery message.

Target group: 3rd and 4th grade children (8 to 10 years of age)
Length of visit: 1,5 hours.

The Mystery Photo

A photo dating to 1901 shows the students at the L'Assomption preparatory school. One of the students was a mysterious figure to whom Wilfrid Laurier once sent packages. Why did Laurier send these packages? What did the packages contain? What role did the recipient play in the life of the Prime Minister?

During the ensuing inquiry, grade-school students will participate in a political debate introducing them to the period's parliamentary customs. Then, they will take part in a play-time activity illustrating the technical advances of the 19th century. To round off their visit, children will be given a tour of the historic house to develop their awareness of past ways of living. By familiarizing themselves with Sir Wilfrid Laurier's career and times, participants will gather enough hints with which to solve the mystery.

Target group: 5th and 6th grade children (10 to 13 years of age)
Length of visit: 1,5 hours.
