SAINT-PAUL-DE-L’ÎLE-AUX-NOIX, Quebec,
September 8, 2011 -
The Fort Lennox National Historic Site will launch its fall events with the activity A Jewish Refugee Camp at Île aux Noix. On September 10 and 11, visitors are invited to discover a little-known aspect of the Fort from World War II.
This interpretative activity will enable visitors to become familiar with the camp’s layout and how life was organized for refugees on Île aux Noix between 1940 and 1943. It includes the presentation of new video clips featuring the personal accounts of former refugees. Artefacts found on Île aux Noix as well as original photographs will also be displayed.
The theme-based activity A Jewish Refugee Camp at Île aux Noix focuses on the history of Fort Lennox during World War II. During this period, Canada, like other Dominions, welcomed refugees and prisoners of war, at Fort Lennox in particular. Heritage interpreters will present this activity at different times during the day.
Guided tours will also be provided in English and French throughout the weekend. Two themed exhibits, one on officers and the other on royal engineers, will also be open to the public at all times throughout the autumn months. We remind you that the Fort Lennox National Historic Site is open to visitors on weekends until October 10, 2011.
The team at Fort Lennox also welcomes school and tour groups, Monday to Friday upon reservation. Groups can take advantage of the activities and services provided from September 6 until mid-October. For more information, please call 450-291-5700.
Notice to Boaters
Docking facilities for pleasure boats located on the east side of Île aux Noix are inaccessible at this time. A few spaces are available in a designated zone on the west side of Île aux Noix for boaters who wish to access the Fort Lennox National Historic Site and tour within its walls.
Parks Canada thanks boaters for their cooperation.
