Parks Canada’s New Xplorers Program
Montreal, Quebec, June 27, 2011 - The Fur Trade at Lachine and The Lachine Canal National Historic Site are pleased to announce the launch of a new national program of exploration and fun activities specifically designed for children aged 6 to 11 and their families. Set to open July 1rst 2011 the Xplorers program will give young visitors the chance to have fun while discovering the historic sites.
The new Xplorers program will encourage discovery through fun and recreational activities. When they arrive, at the historic sites, children will receive an Xplorers activity workbook to help guide their visit. Once they have completed a set number of experiences, they will receive a certificate and a souvenir as tokens of their success. The program will be included in regular entry fees.
This new national program will be offered in 40 Parks Canada parks, sites and marine conservation areas. Activities will vary from place to place according to the unique qualities of each location. Souvenirs will also be unique to each site in order to encourage participants to collect them all. By summer 2012, the Xplorers program will be offered throughout the Parks Canada network.
This year Canada marks the 100th anniversary of the Dominion Parks Branch, the world’s first national parks service, which came into being on May 19, 1911. Today this agency, now known as Parks Canada, protects 167 national historic sites, 42 national parks and 4 national marine conservation areas. These sites comprise one of the world’s largest networks of heritage sites. Canadians can be proud of efforts invested for more than a century to create and preserve our natural heritage – an extraordinary legacy, and surely one of the greatest gifts a country can offer mankind and future generations.
Across the country and throughout 2011, Canada’s historic and natural treasures will be host sites to special programs and activities commemorating this important anniversary.
