Safety Precautions When Using Locks
- The Historic Canals Regulations, Small Vessel Regulations
and Collision Regulations apply when using all heritage canals. For more
information about these regulations, consult Fisheries and Oceans Canada web
site.
- In the case of a repeated offence or refusal to obey the
regulations in place, Parks Canada reserves the right to revoke, at any
time, a permit or to forbid passage on the historic canals. (Art.6)
- The maximum speed limit is 10 km/h.
- A blue line on the mooring wharf indicates the waiting zone
for vessels awaiting the next lockage.
- Piloting a motorcraft while under the influence of alcohol
is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada.
- Follow the instructions given by lockmasters and bridge operators.
- After entering a lock, immobilize your craft by putting it
into reverse.
- Switch off the engine(s) and generator. Open flames and smoking
are prohibited during lockage.
- The bilge blower must be operating during lockage.
- Respect the "wave line" pictogram.
Mind the Wake!
Wake from boats causes major problems on Canada's waterways.
For example, waves:
- erode banks;
- disturb wetland habitats;
- flood nests of aquatic birds;
- damage piers and moored boats;
- make navigation dangerous.
