Proposal Submission Procedure

The Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada wishes to enhance its activity programming and is inviting cultural event producers to offer their services.

Parks Canada's Mandate

• Protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada's natural and cultural heritage
• Foster public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in ways that ensure the ecological and commemorative integrity of these places for present and future generations

Lachine Canal

The Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada has been administered by the Parks Canada Agency since 1978. Extending over 14.5 km and featuring five locks, the Lachine Canal runs through the southwest sector of Montréal, between the Old Port and Lake Saint-Louis. Opened in 1825, over the years the canal became the forerunner of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the cradle of Canadian industry before being closed to shipping in 1970.

The Lachine Canal is especially known for its multi-purpose path, receiving over one million visits annually. Since the canal’s 2002 reopening to recreational boating, the Lachine Canal team has continued its efforts to promote heritage resources and offer a wide range of recreational and tourist activities at a site that is the cornerstone of the revitalization of Montréal’s southwest sector.

Activities and Events

If you are interested in organizing a cultural, educational, leisure or entertainment event at the Lachine Canal that falls under one of the following categories:

• Presentation
• Shows (musicals, plays, etc.)
• Cultural event
• Exhibition
• Event (festival or other)

We invite you to send us written information including:

• Name of the event
• Organizer's name and contact information
• Name of the person in charge
• Proposed event date(s)
• Brief description
• Budget
• Names of participating partners (if any)
• Expected attendance
• Whether it is a ticketed event and, if so, ticket information
• Your expectations regarding how Parks Canada can contribute to the success of your event

Notice: Lachine Canal Noise Policy

All event organizers submitting an activity proposal to the Lachine Canal must comply with the agreed-to standards during large-scale outdoor events. More specifically, the Lachine Canal’s programming will be in keeping with the code of the City of Montréal, which states:

Under the code (R.B.C.M. c. B-3, section 20) – Noise

Noise is not permitted in public areas without authorization (a decision) from the City of Montréal. The sound pressure level permitted in public areas during one-time outdoor events, including sound tests, is 80 dBA within 35 metres of the sound source (e.g. the stage) between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The authorization issued for events specifies the times at which amplified sound will be permitted. Organizers must pay close attention to the impact of noise on the neighbourhood. Parks Canada takes this issue into account when considering submissions.
