Starting at Lock No. 1 in the Old Port of Montreal, follow history along the canal and the industry which dominated the surrounding area for more than a century will be revealed to you.
Xplorers Program
The Xplorers Program is dedicated to children visiting with their families. It offers entertaining activities suited for their age, and allows them to discover the natural and historic treasures of Canada.
When they arrive at the Saint-Gabriel Lock (under Des Seigneurs Bridge) or at the Atwater information booth (North of the Atwater footbridge), children will receive an Xplorers activity workbook to help guide their visit. Once they have completed a set number of experiences, they will receive a certificate and a souvenir as tokens of their success. The program is free of charge.
This national program is offered in more than 60 parks, sites and marine conservation areas in the Parks Canada network. Activities will vary from place to place according to the unique qualities of each location.

How the Locks Operate
Close to the Maison des Éclusiers(lock keeper's house), you can familiarise yourself with the lockage while discovering the spectacular site of the number 1 and number 2 locks. The local interpretive panels are a great occasion for cyclists and pedestrians to learn about the history of the Lachine canal.
Ongoing Exhibitions
Historic photos and artifacts, old maps and plans and interactive games take you back to the great moments of a canal that was the predecessor of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the cradle of Canadian industry.

Just steps from the Lachine Canal, relive one of the most exciting episodes in Canadian history in an old fur warehouse built in 1803. As you browse around the pelt bales, cases of goods and barrels of provisions you will discover all the ins and outs of a trade that has long been the main economic motor of the country. This fun-filled, interactive exhibition will charm both young and old alike.
