Experiences to Discover

Create a craft

In Victorian Canada, boys and girls learned to make many useful things with materials found in their local environment. These creations could be given as gifts or displayed in the family home. Here are instructions for some crafts that Bella, Willie, Jennie and Max King enjoyed.

Cuisine in Victorian Canada focused on foods which were available seasonally. Willie King tended to the garden at Woodside and cultivated vegetables to use at home and sell at the market. When guests visited the Kings, they might be treated to some of these home-made goods. Here are some recipes for traditional foods that the Kings would prepare using their woodstove. Try them for yourself!

During your visit to Woodside, amuse yourself with some of the same leisure activities as the Kings! In 1891, residents of Berlin (Kitchener) enjoyed having a picnic lunch and challenged each other with games of skill. You can learn to walk in stilts or play croquet! Later, discover the wildlife and flowers hidden among the 4.65 hectares of woodland surrounding the historic house.
