Description

Celebrate the Peterborough Lift Locks 107th birthday by visiting on Saturday July 9th. After watching a few boats go through the lock walk down to the Visitor Centre to learn even more about the historic Peterborough Lift Lock and the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Here are some fun facts about the Peterborough Lift Lock:
  • The opening of the Peterborough Lift Lock was July 9th, 1904 – 107 years ago!
  • The Stoney Lake was one of the first boats to descend the Peterborough Lift Lock on July 9th 1904.
  • The Peterborough Lift Lock is one of only 8 hydraulic lift locks in the world and it’s the largest!
  • During each transfer, 1700 tonnes of water are lifted in one tub and 1844 tonnes of water descend in the other.
  • The Peterborough Lift Lock was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1979.
