Volunteers contribute 4000+ hours in Northern Ontario

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO, September 15, 2011 – As part of its Centennial, Parks Canada is honouring its volunteers during the month of September. Over the last year, 162 individuals have donated more than 4000 hours of their time to protecting and presenting Canada’s treasured natural and historic places in Northern Ontario.

To recognize the valued contributions of these dedicated individuals and groups, Parks Canada – Northern Ontario will be organizing appreciation events at each of its heritage protected areas for its volunteers and cooperating Friends associations over the coming weeks. Furthermore, each Northern Ontario park and site is featuring on its website pictures and testimonials from its volunteers to share why and how volunteers share their ideas, knowledge, talent and skills in support of the Parks Canada mandate.

Parks Canada offers volunteer activities in every part of the country, from coast to coast to coast. Volunteers help organize and deliver special events, greet and guide visitors, assist in the maintenance of protected areas, and help staff collect data – for the benefit of all Canadians.

By taking part in Parks Canada’s volunteer activities, volunteers develop a connection to our country’s treasured places, enrich their lives and help make a difference. Parks Canada appreciates all volunteers for the richness of their contributions!
