Louisbourg 2015: Ordinary people - extraordinary stories

Marvel at the pageantry of celebration days and get to know the extraordinary stories of individuals and groups who helped make Canada what it is today. 

Make your own history at the Fortress of Louisbourg! Fire a cannon, set up a 21st- or 18th-century camp in the King's Bastion or taste our Fortress RumTM! In the evening, kick back and have a great time at our Louisbourg Live Performing Arts events.

Music, theatre, dance and storytelling will fill the air both within and outside the walls of the fortified town. Louisbourg Live productions are made possible through partners and amazing artists from near and far. Experience the arts in spectacular indoor and outdoor spaces.

Roots to Boots: Hiking, Music, Stories

June 11-14 

Roots to Boots is a new weekend festival taking place in Cheticamp and Louisbourg in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It offers a unique blend of walks, storytelling, food experiences, local flavour concerts and late night square dances. Enjoy Cape Breton Island’s finest talent presented on hiking trails and small stages in many different venues throughout the towns of Cheticamp and Louisbourg. Cape Breton & Newfoundland communities unite for this new grassroots festival celebrating the Acadian connections between these two islands.

Louisbourg Celebrates: Mi'kmaq Heritage Day

June 20 - Noon to 4 p.m.

Join us as we celebrate our Mi'kmaq heritage with a Pow-Wow at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Take part in traditional song and dance, listen to Mi'kmaq storytellers speak of their culture and their legends. The day will be filled with the sound of drums and the smells and tastes of traditional Aboriginal food. There is something for everyone as we experience and celebrate National Aboriginal Day!

Learn to Camp

June 27-28

New campers will pitch tents and learn camping skills in the terreplein (courtyard) of the King's Bastion while spending the night under the star-filled sky inside the 18th century fortress walls. All you need is your appetite, sleeping bag and curiosity. Tent provided.

Cost: $29.30 per person; includes activities, supper, breakfast and snacks. Free for children five and under. (Entrance fees are separate.)

Her Voice Theatre Company will bring the remarkable life and work of Katharine MacLennan to the stage. This 90-minute play will explore Katharine's connection to the women of Louisbourg's past and highlight her contributions to our country's heritage.

Eric Letcher presents a bigger, better, more mysterious re-launch of the Fortress of Louisbourg Murder Mystery. The Condemned brings audience immersion to a new level, allowing visitors the chance to piece together clues and solve the case.

Parks Day

Come celebrate our Canadian identity during this extra special Parks Day dedicated to 50 years of the Canadian flag. Fun for the whole family! Join us for a stimulating flag quiz and sing the national anthem during the raising of the flag at noon like it was done for the first time 50 years ago.

Join us in celebrating Cape Breton’s diverse heritage at our multicultural fair. Sounds, smells, sights, tastes and re-enactors will make you believe you’re celebrating in the 1700’s. Enjoy artists, artisans, musicians and dancers as they demonstrate their talent.

18th Century Style Camping

July 25-26

Experience the magic of the Fortress of Louisbourg after the sun goes down with this unique opportunity to sample the life of 18th century Louisbourg in a new fashion: camping!

Join us for one night of fun camping under the star filled skies inside the Fortress walls. Your 18th century camping supplies will be provided, including recipes and ingredients to cook your own 18th century meals, and flint stones to start the fire of course!

Starts at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 25.
Ends at 12:30 PM on Sunday, July 26.
Participants are free to arrive before start time and leave after end time
.

Price: $79.50 per person (taxes included; entrance fees are separate)

Price includes ingredients to cook your own 18th-century supper and breakfast over the fire and a lunch at Grandchamp Tavern inside the fortified town. Each tent is equipped with 18th-century style mattresses, dishes and cooking tools.

  • Maximum of 4 people per group/tent
  • Registration is required at least 3 days before the event; camping fees must be paid at the time of registration.
  • This is a rain or shine event.

Grand Phare Bicycle Ride

July 26

Exercise, breathe in the fresh sea air and immerse yourself in history! This 20-kilometre bicycle excursion will take you from modern to colonial times, with a stop at the site of the first lighthouse in Canada, and finish at the reconstructed town. Presented by Parks Canada and Velo Cape Breton.

Storm the Fortress: Motorcyclists invade the Fortress at dusk!

August 2

Ride your motorcycle into the Fortress of Louisbourg along with hundreds of fellow bikers. A unique opportunity to experience the past from the seat of your bike!

Join us at the Fortress of Louisbourg as Parks Canada turns the spotlight on its historic military strongholds! Fab Forts, celebrated at national historic sites across the country, is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to discover the central role that forts – and our own fortress – play in community life, and to appreciate their profound importance to Canada over the past four centuries.

SuperFête - Eat, Drink and be Merry!

August 22, 23 

It’s a traditional feast with a twist. This traditional holiday was once celebrated over 300 years ago, and now it’s back again and bigger than ever! This year at Superfête, Parks Canada and Fortress Louisbourg Association present: The Great Louisbourg Sleepover. Enjoy a wide variety of special events and the opportunity to camp at the Fortress overnight! There will be an artillery salute to the king, a ghost tour in the evening, breakfast the next morning, and a day time concert at 3 pm with Keith Mullins!

There are so many things to do at SuperFête, you won’t know where to start. During the day, we are ready to delight all of your senses! Sample wine with Madame Drucour, take part in the chocolate treat workshop with our delicious and traditional Heritage Chocolate, and taste FortressTM Rum, that’s worth protecting. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to take part in mouth-watering activities everyone can enjoy!

The Acadian community gathers at the Fortress of Louisbourg to celebrate its lasting legacies and historic ties to Jeanne Dugas and the 18th century fortified town. Acadian music, culture and traditions add some extra "joie de vivre" to Louisbourg's streets. Take in special talks on the Acadian customs, traditions and historic connections woven into the history of the fortress and the community of Louisbourg.

Hammer In - Blacksmithing Festival

Learn ancient techniques through entertaining demonstrations and then try your hand at working the hammer and anvil. You will discover the art and craft of blacksmithing and the importance it held many years ago.

Ride Into the Past - Bicycle Tour

Join us for a guided 15-km bicycle tour, hosted by Velo Cape Breton, travelling from the Fortress of Louisbourg's Royal Battery to Kennington Cove, with various stops along the way to share history and stories. Celtic Colours: Step Into the Past

The evening begins with an 18th century meal served by period-costumed animators and continues with a candlelight concert. As the lanterns guide you from the period café to the picturesque chapel and music rings out, you will find yourself wondering what century you are in. Treat yourself to this one-of-a-kind event. But don't delay. It sells out very quickly.

Celtic Colours: Music of the Night

October 16

Picture a street lined with candle-lit windows where music and laughter spill out of doors and into the street. Diners finish their 18th century meal and chat excitedly as they move from one stone building to the next, guided by villagers with lanterns. They find historic venues offering music, storytellers, a square dance and, finally, a tavern. The entire village is alive with music! It doesn't matter what century we're in, because this is a unique experience you'll never forget!
