Louisbourg Celebrates: Mi'kmaw Heritage Day

June 21 - Noon to 4 p.m.
Join us as we celebrate our Mi'kmaw heritage with a Pow-Wow at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Take part in traditional song and dance, listen to Mi'kmaw storytellers speak of their culture and their legends. The day will be filled with the sound of drums and the smell and taste of traditional Aboriginal food. There is something for everyone as we experience and celebrate National Aboriginal Day!

Learn to Camp: Aboriginal Traditions

June 28-29
New campers will pitch tents, learn camping skills and take part in Aboriginal storytelling in the terreplein (courtyard) of the King's Bastion while spending the night under the star-filled sky inside the 18th century fortress walls. All you need is your appetite, sleeping bag and curiosity. Tent provided.
Cost: $66 per family of up to four (includes activities, lunch, supper, breakfast and snacks.  Entrance fees are separate.)  $22 per additional person.

Louisbourg Celebrates: Families and Parks Day

Family fun is on the menu every day at the Fortress of Louisbourg and Parks Day is no exception. The fun includes games, dancing, theatre, dress-up, children's entertainers and a barbecue.

LouisRocks Concert: Carson Downey, Thom Swift and others!

There's blue all around us, from the sky to the ocean, and now we're adding a blues-themed concert! Taking the stage will be Carson Downey, Thom Swift, John Campbelljohn, Kim Wempe, and Curtis Matheson, with Keith Mullins, Kevin Corbett, and Kim Dunn providing rhythm, to kick off the LouisRocks concert series.

CultureFête

July 25-27
Experience the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Cape Breton's diverse heritage as the streets of Louisbourg come alive during this vibrant multicultural fair. Re-enactors will transport you back to the 1700s while artists, artisans, musicians and traditional dancers demonstrate their links to the story of Isle Royale.

Grand Phare Ride

August 10
Exercise, breathe in the fresh sea air and immerse yourself in history! This 20-kilometre bicycle excursion will take you from modern to colonial times, with a stop at the site of the first lighthouse in Canada, and finish at the reconstructed town.  Presented by Parks Canada and Velo Cape Breton.

Louisbourg Celebrates: Pride Day

August 12
Be merry and gay as the Fortress of Louisbourg becomes the stage of a special event for the LGBTQ pride community! Enjoy and celebrate the diversity of people on the island and in surrounding communities who share our pride in one another.  Events include a parade, picnic, and open mic, as well as a performance by Rouge Fatale and a reading of the play "Carnations".  11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Archaeology: Uncovering the Past

August 14-16
Where better to learn about archaeology than the unique grounds of the Fortress of Louisbourg? Connect with the Fortress of Louisbourg's very own archaeologists, conservation and collection specialists. See demonstrations of terrestrial fieldwork, conservation work and collections management.

Fab Forts

Join us at the Fortress of Louisbourg as Parks Canada turns the spotlight on its historic military strongholds! Fab Forts, celebrated at national historic sites across the country, is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to discover the central role that forts – and our own fortress – play in community life, and to appreciate their profound importance to Canada over the past four centuries.

Louisbourg Celebrates: Acadian Day

August 17
The Acadian community gathers at the Fortress of Louisbourg to celebrate its lasting legacies and historic ties to Jeanne Dugas and the 18th century fortified town. Acadian music, culture and traditions add some extra "joie de vivre" to Louisbourg's streets. Take in special talks on the Acadian customs, traditions and historic connections woven into the history of the fortress and the community of Louisbourg.

SuperFête de Saint-Louis

August 23-24
Celebrated in the 1700s, this traditional holiday continues to live on at the Fortress of Louisbourg. You'll find yourself surrounded by period military demonstrations, parades, performers, food, music and dancing.

LouisRocks Concert: Jimmy Rankin and Còig

August 23
Jimmy Rankin and Còig take the stage at the Fortress of Louisbourg, filling the fortress with the sound of music Cape Bretoners have come to know and love. Be sure to take in this exciting concert at our picturesque venue.

LouisRocks Concert: Men of the Deeps and The Barra MacNeils

August 24
Come enjoy traditional Cape Breton music by The Barra MacNeils and a moving performance by the Men of the Deeps, North America's only coal mining chorus, as they perform at one of Canada's most unique venues. This concert will ignite your passion for local talent through vocals, guitar, percussion, fiddle and much more.

Learn to Camp 18th Century Style

August 30-31
A brand-new old-fashioned camping experience

This is a unique opportunity to sample the life of 18th century Louisbourg in a new fashion: camping!

You will spend two days and one night immersed in history. Not only will you experience the magic of Louisbourg at night, but you will also learn skills that can be transferred to modern life. This is a program specially designed for families or groups. Each tent is fitted with mattresses, cooking equipment, and camping gear 18th century style. Included in the fees are also one supper, one breakfast and one lunch per person.
Starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday and ends at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Participants are free to arrive before start time and leave after end time.

Ride Into the Past

Join us for a guided 15-km bicycle tour, hosted by Velo Cape Breton, travelling from the Fortress of Louisbourg's Royal Battery to Kennington Cove, with various stops along the way to share history and stories. Celtic Colours International Festival: Step Into the Past

The evening begins with an 18th century meal served by period-costumed animators and continues with a candlelight concert. As the lanterns guide you from the period café down the cobblestone street to the picturesque chapel and music rings out, you will find yourself wondering what century you are in. Treat yourself to this one-of-a-kind event. But don't delay. It sells out very quickly.

Celtic Colours International Festival: Music of the Night

October 17
Picture a cobblestone street lined with candle-lit windows where music and laughter spill out of doors and into the street. Diners finish their 18th century meal and chat excitedly as they move from one stone building to the next, guided by villagers with lanterns. They find historic venues offering music, storytellers, a square dance and, finally, a tavern. The entire village is alive with music! It doesn't matter what century we're in, because this is a unique experience you'll never forget!
