Attractions in the Area

Plan to spend at least two days in historic Bonavista. There are attractions such as:

The Matthew

A locally built replica of the ship John Cabot sailed to Bonavista from Bristol, England, in 1497. The vessel can be viewed on the Bonavista harbour front.

Cape Bonavista Lighthouse

Enter the world of Jeremiah White, who tended the light at Cape Bonavista 100 years ago. Cape Bonavista Lighthouse first began operation in 1843. White's descendants continued to work at the station well into the 20th century. The Lighthouse has been restored to the 1870 period. Guides in costume show visitors through the site.

The Mockbeggar Property

Home of F. Gordon Bradley, one of Newfoundland's first representatives in the Canadian Senate. The site is composed of many buildings representing diverse aspects of traditional Newfoundland lifestyle.

Dungeon Provincial Park

A collapsed sea cave with a natural arch carved by tidal action highlights this site near the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse.
