chance to get immersed in Viking life. Dress up, play games, hear sagas, or
learn about Norse life on a guided tour. Our popular Xplorers booklet is back
this year. It’s full of kids’ activities. The souvenirs and
certificates are back too!
Westward Viking Festival—A real “Taste of Vinland”

Come experience life as a Viking by participating in the Westward Viking
Festival. Immerse yourself in every day Viking life in our “Viking
Encampment Program” or take in one of the many site programs of Viking
age skills. Try a taste of the region as participating organizations
celebrate the festival by showcasing unique food, crafts, art and music. A
real “Taste of Vinland”.
A Tast of Vinland Gala Showcase

Celebrate with us at this exciting evening of culinary collaboration and
cultural celebration! This showcase of regional and international
entertainment, music, storytelling, food and laughter will highlight the many
wonderful cultural experiences offered by local businesses and organisations
in the L’Anse aux Meadows region.
With an ice carving by Chef Steve Watson standing sentry nearby, a feast of
traditional Newfoundland, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Viking fare will be
available for sampling, as prepared in cooperation with local restaurants,
Chef Watson, and Chef Arden Jackson from the Icelandic-Canadian Club of
Toronto. Be enthralled by our masterful Viking storytellers of L’Anse
aux Meadows National Historic Site and enjoy live musical performances.
Performers include folksinger Lindy Vopnfjörð, a trio of female
voices from the Norwegian Ladies Chorus of Seattle, Viking re-enactor and
musician Wade Hillier and other local musicians from the Great Northern
Following the Taste of Vinland Gala Showcase, please join us for an evening
beach bonfire and fireworks display on the shores of the community of
L’Anse aux Meadows.
Leif Erikson Statue Unveiling

As part of the Westward Viking Festival, a replica of Seattle’s statue
of Leif Erikson will be unveiled at L’Anse aux Meadows to commemorate
the establishment of the Norse camp by Leif and his crew on these shores over
a thousand years ago. This will be the final statue placed as statues have
also been placed in Trondheim, Norway and Brattahlid, Greenland. Become part
of the Saga.
