Considered one of Canada’s greatest seamen, Captain Bob Bartlett commanded more than twenty expeditions to the Arctic, many of which were devoted to advancing scientific knowledge. He even served as first mate on Admiral Peary’s 1898 Arctic expedition.
At Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site you learn how his family home typifies the refined lifestyle of Newfoundland outport merchant families of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Captain Bob’s seafaring spirit of adventure symbolizes the collective imagination of the people of Canada’s East Coast.
