As you explore the remains of French and English fortifications at Castle Hill National Historic Site you’re always aware of the view of Placentia Bay, always aware of the pleasant feel of the area’s land and seascapes.
Perhaps the French experienced those feelings when they founded Plaisance, the French capital of Terre-Neuve, near here in 1662. In its seesaw struggle with Great Britain for supremacy of the Newfoundland cod fishery, France viewed
this part of Newfoundland’s southern shore as a key piece of the strategic puzzle.
