Video on the Barracks

Transcript: These are the living quarters for the men that were stationed at Prince of Wales Fort. This structure was originally a two story stone building housing the governor’s quarters, the officers’ quarters, and fur storage area on the first floor and the men’s quarters on the second floor. The stone walls offered little insulation and the men complained constantly of the cold. One man wrote home describing how during one night he had rolled over in his sleep, leaning his head against the wall. In the morning, he awoke and to his horror to find that his hair had frozen to the wall.
