New Adventure Park Opening in 2012
Variety Heritage Adventure Park © Parks Canada
Parks Canada is working with Variety, the Children's Charity of Manitoba, to build a new adventure park at The Forks National Historic Site. It will replace the former playground that was removed in 2006.
The Variety Heritage Adventure Park will be accessible for children of all abilities. The play features will encourage imaginative, creative play while presenting the numerous historic stories of The Forks. The project is currently in the design and build phase and will include:
- Seven different play zones
- Interactive and one-of-a-kind play features
- An outdoor mini-stage area for presentations and performances
- Water features
Construction began in April 2010 with a completion date now slated for 2012. While Parks Canada had anticipated that the adventure park would open in 2011, because its innovative play elements are one-of-a-kind, they must be custom-built, which means that extra time is required for research so that they accurately reflect the site's historical stories and to ensure they meet safety and accessibility standards.
As a result, Parks Canada, Variety and the project team are taking the time needed to do things right and ensure the Variety Heritage Adventure Park is a truly world-class facility when it opens.
The Government of Canada has invested $600,000 into this project through Canada's Economic Action Plan. Parks Canada is working with Variety to raise the additional funds required.
The design-build team from Winnipeg, Manitoba includes:
-
Project managers: J & D Penner Ltd
-
Landscape architects: Hilderman Thomas Frank Cram & Associates
-
Playground equipment supplier: Crozier Agencies
